Erosion and Sediment Control - Planning & Design (ESCD1™)
Objective, measurable and unambiguous erosion and sediment control planning and design - the foundation of effective and defensible erosion and sediment control practice.

Erosion and Sediment Control - Planning and Design 1 (ESCD1™)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Erosion and Sediment Control - Planning and Design (ESCD1™) builds on the principles of effective erosion and sediment control practice developed and applied in Erosion and Sediment Control Practitioner (ESCP™). With a sound understanding of effective erosion and sediment control principles, the erosion and sediment practitioner can influence erosion and sediment control outcomes through erosion and sediment control planning and design that is realistic, timely and effective.
It is highly recommended that Erosion and Sediment Control Practitioner (ESCP™) be completed prior to taking Erosion and Sediment Control - Planning and Design.
Erosion and Sediment Control - Planning and Design, through a series of practical exercises and case-studies, gives the course participants experience in site and construction methodology assessment as it pertains to erosion and sediment control and the application, design, quantification and prescription of erosion and sediment control practices. The premise of the course is that most erosion and sediment control challenges can be identified prior to the start of construction and, therefore, many erosion and sediment requirements can also be designed and prescribed prior to the start of construction. Erosion and sediment control must be proactive. To be proactive, erosion and sediment control prescriptions must be objective, measurable and unambiguous.
This course promotes and provides a significant opportunity for participants to discuss the decision making and application challenges associated with erosion and sediment control.
Erosion and sediment control practical exercises and case studies include:
Erosion and sediment control and construction scheduling
Erosion and sediment control risk assessment and factors influencing risk assessment
Disturbance area calculation including slope steepness, length and area and comparison between design calculation and field measurement
Seed and mulching including selection, application rates and quantities, and cost estimation
Check dam design including dam type, spacing, factors to consider, and limitations of practice
Sediment fence design for uniform, convex, concave and complex slopes
Erosion and sediment control design for residential development sites
Organic fiber rolls
Application of free online and downloadable software for erosion control materials selection and prescription for slopes and channels including an introduction to the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE)
Erosion and sediment control planning and design for a low traffic volume road
Erosion and sediment control and site restoration for a natural gas production wellsite
